Higher Education in India

India has a long history of formal higher education through the Universities of Takshasila, Valabhi, Nalanda and Vikramasila covering the period of (supposedly) 700 BC to 1200 AD. Higher Education Institutions in India, in their present form, are a few years older than 200 years. CMS College, Kottayam started functioning from 1817, and the first Engineering College (evolved into the present day IIT, Roorkee) in 1847. At present India has about 50,000 Colleges and Universities. Higher education in India is in the process of major transition influenced by political, social, economic and technology considerations.
